Home Built Deck
The story of
the Alo family's deck building experience.
As first-time deck builders,
Mohamemd (Malo) and Sinan (Bop) decided to build the largest deck known
to man. In speaking with one of my deck building consultants (who builds
decks for a living) he said, "Hmm... I never built a deck that big."
What? A professional deck builder, never done this before? This did not
deter us, but made us even more ambitious. We wanted to do the impossible
and unexpected, build a deck that is beyond huge and virtually unimaginable.
As first-time deck builders, we were not expected to be successful, but
were determined to reach success.
We designed the deck to be
as straight forward as possible. All the wood pieces were 12 feet long,
so we designed the deck to be a simple 24x24' deck without having to do
much cutting. We later found out that it would have to be 24x25'. The
entire deck building project took 2 days for the deck, and another day
for the rails. Rails were added later as Jumana and Adnan began running
around. The deck eventually cost about $1450 for the deck and $550 for
the rails. All the experts we asked said it should cost around $15,000.
So we built this thing at a tenth of the cost and followed all regulations
and building codes. SOLID!! The rails were installed while it was raining
outside, Malo and Bop were not only soaked, but determined to finish!
The reason for this photo album
is to show you how we (a bunch of amatuers) were able to accomplish a
great thing. Also to document what we did, so that we don't forget and
can replicate our efforts.
UPDATE: We had about 40 or
50 overweight guys on the deck at once and it held up!!! That means, It
Worked!!
